Dessin d'une femme Chipewaise en canot

Chippewa Woman

This drawing was found among the papers of Father Félix Martin, s.j. (1804-1886). It shows a woman in a canoe. According to the title, the woman is a Chippewa, a member of the Ojibway (Anishinabe); the term « Chippewa » being a variation of « Ojibway ».

The Anishinabe were the largest Native group in North America, occupying Northern Michigan and parts of Ontario at the time of Father Martin.
